“It’s like a pair of heels, a pair of heels makes a woman look beautiful, timeless, tall and feminine and that’s what I hope this book inspires women to be.”- Rae Morris (Timeless Makeup)
Last week Rae Morris took time out of her very busy schedule as the Makeup Director for L’oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival to talk to me about her latest book ‘Timeless Makeup’ , she also gave us a few insider Tips and Tricks on how to get the perfect makeup look as you get older!
In your latest book Timeless Makeup, you take women back to basics like colour compatibilty and how to shape a brow. What made you decide to touch on the basics?
To be perfectly honest, it was because I worked with Cyndi Lauper and she taught me some techniques and she trained me on some of the basics. How to shape an older eye. I realised that there are women out there who probably never learned the basics. There is also no one out there teaching women of that age. I thought this is a really important time in a woman’s life. It was also the love of doing older women for weddings and events that made me decide to do a book for older women.
In your book you show that women of any age can wear a bold lip, or a strong liquid line. What would you say to someone who is still a little scared to try something bold, but secretly wants to?
I wouldn’t say everyone should do it. I believe that you should only do a bold lip if you have a youthful lip shape. When you are drawing the line of your lip, go on inside of your bottom lip, you want to lift that lip up.
Not everyone should wear a bold liquid eyeliner either, only people who suit it. But what I do believe is that if women want to use bold colours, keep them matte, no frosted eye shadows. Keep the colour close to the lash line, and the outer corner should lift up.
So again I don’t believe all women should wear eye liner, depending on the eye shape, it should be really smudged and blended as women get older.
There is a section in your book “beyond makeup” did you find working along side Trinny and Susanna inspired you to help others find their timeless look?
Definitely I worked with them two years ago, when I was in the middle of writing it and when I did their makeup Trinny and Susanna both said to me, (because I did techniques that I thought all makeup artists did)… they said no Rae these things are things we didn’t know and I didn’t realise that I was teaching them something. Trinny was like “you need to get this out there, and you need to show your techniques”.
Most women, about 90% of women line their under eye a third of the way across, this is truly the biggest mistake you can make as an older woman. If you line your under eye a third of the way along you are stopping that eye liner at the lowest point, you’re pointing to your droopy eye.
Now saying this to Trinny and Susanna, they said “oh my god you have to write this” they were really forceful and I think what it was, was that I was always a bit to scared to say the truth and say “no you can’t do this, you can’t wear shimmer, you can’t round your eyebrows”
Basically yes, they are into their truths and I want to be a little bit more like them. I want to be factual and make it simple, and make it so women can understand. That’s what Trinny and Susanna do, they are very straight forward, simple and clear cut.
For women doing makeup it gets very confusing, they get told so many different things. Keep it simple. Forget colours, forget trends, think “does this colour make me look younger?” and if it does, add a different colour if you want to. It’s all about making yourself look younger, contouring and re-shaping. It’s about NOT doing the traditional makeup you do when you’re 18.
What is timeless makeup to you?
You don’t know what era ‘that’ makeup was performed, but you know that ‘that’ woman could stand in any era. Timeless makeup for me is when a woman looks so beautiful. it’s not just makeup, she looks beautiful. When it’s done you want to know who did it, and it’s beautifully done. It could go to any era. It’s makeup you could wear to a wedding, it’s makeup you could wear on the red carpet, it’s makeup you could wear to the academy awards, it’s makeup that could be on the cover of a magazine, It’s not put into a pocket of this is what you have to wear when you’re here. It’s just that beautiful, timeless and elegant look. It’s like a pair of heels, a pair of heels makes a woman look beautiful, timeless, tall and feminine and that’s what I hope this book inspires women to be.
